13 Nov Julian Gressel named MLS Rookie of the Year
Stellar star Julian Gressel has been named America’s Rookie of the Year.
The 23-year-old Atlanta United midfielder was the clear winner of the Major League Soccer honour, taking more than 50% of the total vote.
The vote is made by players, managers and members of the Press.
Born in Germany, Julian moved to America aged 18 to study and play football at Providence College in Rhode Island, quickly earning a reputation as one of the best players in the amateur game.
When his college days came to an end he was picked by Atlanta in the first round of the 2017 MLS Draft and went on to make 24 starts, scoring five goals with nine assists as United made a late surge in the league to finish fourth, making the playoffs in their inaugural season.
Julian said: “It’s been a tremendous year for me personally and now you add a trophy to it. It’s kind of a cool thing to be recognised by everybody in the league.”
Julian’s agent Nicco Roffo said: “This is a prestigious honour and a richly deserved one. Julian is a player with a very bright future indeed and we are excited to see him build on this.”
